We are filled with disbelief that we have lost Dick. How can that be? I still expect to get an email or a call from him with a simple question, "Wanna have lunch?" That was always the way we would reconnect over the years. Sadly, there were not enough of those times. It was always "soon," or "next time we get into the city."
Dick and I go back to the '60's and WHDH. He broke me into Boston radio and his talents far exceeded mine. He was a great writer and news editor and certainly had a "radio voice" ... deep. mellow, strong and "on air" whenever the opportunity came. We re-connected in the '70's in New York and between doing public relations, video production and broadcasting, Dick made a name for himself. I can still hear him saying, "News first, fast, five minutes sooner ... on WABC Radio!"
There were lots of chapters to Dick's life. Jean and I got to attend their wedding when Dick and Bernice got married in the chapel at the United Nations. What a neat venue! Dick and Bernice would spend every New Year's Eve in Times Square covering the event for Panasonic. One year they invited us to come, and we spent the night in a high-rise hotel overlooking the festivities. What an experience!
As I sit here writing this, I am at a desk that Dick and Bernice gave us. It was Dick's father's. I had mentioned I was looking for a desk ...and next thing I know, Dick pulls up in our driveway with the desk in the back of his car. It will always remind me of Dick and his thoughtfulness, and his willingness to help out. I reached into my frig the other night and pulled out a bottle of club soda. I thought, "Yipes! Could Dick drink club soda! In a restaurant, the waitress would bring him 3 or 4 at a time. And before you knew it, he ordered 3 or 4 more. Then there was Dick's Ford Crown Vic with the lights and the sirens. It was like being in a police cruiser but not being arrested. So many memories of a life well-spent! Thanks for the ride, Dick. Rest well my friend.
