Obituary of William John Griffin III

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William John Griffin III (Bill), age 81, on September 21, 2024, after a courageous battle with a brief illness. Born on June 21, 1943, in Middletown, Connecticut, Bill's life was commemorated by hard work, dedication and meaningful connections with his family and community.


Bill attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Middletown, graduating with the class of 1961. He furthered his education at Dean Junior College in Franklin, Massachusetts, before earning his bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Hartford. After leaving Connecticut, Bill resided in Freehold, New Jersey, and at the time of his passing, he was living in East Windsor, New Jersey.


Bill's professional journey began with a successful career at Chevron Oil in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He then obtained his real estate license, starting a new chapter in his career, which he ultimately rounded out as a Financial Advisor. In retirement Bill worked for over ten years at ShopRite, receiving employee of the month honors several times and recently his 10 year pin. Bill's leadership extended into community service, and he was a proud volunteer member of the Hartford Jaycees, where he served as President in the 1970s.


Bill leaves behind, Ellen N. Karch of East Windsor, NJ; his two sons, William "Skip" Griffin and his wife Karin of Southington, CT, and Scott Griffin and his fiancée Blerta of Cheshire, CT; his stepson Randy Karch and his wife Meghan of Vineland, NJ; and four cherished grandchildren: John, Rilee, Logan, and Bo. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Ruth, as well as his brother, Bob.


An animal lover at heart, Bill had a special bond with his two cats, Abigail and Little Leroy, who will miss him dearly. A devoted reader, he particularly enjoyed the works of James Patterson, having read all of his books. He was also a passionate fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New York Giants. In his earlier years, Bill enjoyed golfing and proudly volunteered at the Greater Hartford Open Golf Tournament. He also derived great joy in coaching his two sons in Little League baseball, treasuring the time spent mentoring them. More recently, Bill enjoyed the peaceful pastime of fishing, which he shared with Randy, day trips to Dutch Country, Cape May, Delaware River sites and the Jersey Shore, creating countless treasured memories. Bill’s life was a testament to resilience and hard work, He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew him.


A graveside service for family and friends will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery, located at Madison Avenue and Helena Street in Newfield, NJ, on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. The family extends sincere gratitude to Simplicity Funeral and Cremation Services in Hightstown, NJ, for their compassionate arrangements.
