Obituary of John A. Micalizzi

John Anthony Micalizzi, 92, of Monroe Township, passed away on Friday, May, 17, 2024, at The Elms in Cranbury.

Born in Calabria, Italy, John was the third of five sons born to John and Pauline Micalizzi. He immigrated to the United States in 1934 and resided with his family in Brooklyn, New York.

John attended P.S. 212 and won a prestigious award while attending the New York School of Art and Design. Along with his brothers, John used his natural artistic talents to create Micalizzi Studios in 1961 (a furniture restoration and manufacturing company) located in Brooklyn. In 1986 they moved the business to Jamesburg, New Jersey. Pop and Papa, as he was affectionately known was the family’s go-to person for any repair of paintings, furniture and house structural imperfections.

A bachelor for 54 years, John met the love of his life, Tulia, in 1986 and they married in 1988. He instantly became a father figure to her three children, their significant others, and their pets.

John was fluent in Italian and a passionate artist. Wherever he was with his sketchpad and pencil, was his studio. He was also passionate about music and was a talented accordion, guitar and keyboard player. He was a lover of Karaoke. John would travel with his beloved Tulia and sing, encouraging anyone he met to sing. This was his way of demonstrating his belief that all should enjoy life and each other.

Along with his wife, Tulia, John is survived by his children, Arthur Williamson, Patricia Modugno, and Michelle Micalizzi Tweedly, and their spouses, Timothy Slavicek and James Modugno; his grandchildren, Thomas, Anthony, Michele, Nicholas, Kait, Dominic; his great-grandson, Dominic; his sisters-in-law, Rose and Pina Micalizzi; and his nieces and nephews, including John and Jeannie Micalizzi, Mike and Paulette Volaro, and Rose and Sal Sciancalepore.

John was predeceased by his son-in-law, Patrick Tweedly; his brothers, Joseph, David, Dominic and Thomas Micalizzi; and his sister-in-law, Martha.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lord R.C. Church, 185 Applegarth Road, Monroe, NJ.

Cremation was private.
