She lived in New York City after graduating, then returned to New Jersey to begin working at Educational Testing Service in Princeton in 1966. She lived in central New Jersey for the rest of her life. She remained at ETS for over three decades, where she worked on the verbal aptitude sections of the SAT, SSAT, GRE, and LSAT. She would also go on to earn a master's degree in education from Rutgers University.

Susan was a beloved mother and grandmother and enjoyed visiting the San Francisco area to visit her family and the seals at Fisherman’s Wharf. She was a lover of animals and over the years a devoted caretaker of her dogs Fluffy, MacDuff, P.D., Daisy, Kaya, and Mabel. She maintained lifelong friendships, staying in touch with a group of college friends, and traveling to Scotland and Australia after retirement to visit friends from ETS. She was also an avid reader of mystery novels and stayed active in her later years by practicing tai chi.
